Baylis, Charles A.

Charles Augustus Baylis (1902-1975), professor of philosophy, was born in Portland, Oregon, on April 2, 1902. He received his A.B. and A.M. degrees from the University of Washington in 1923 and 1924, and his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1926. The next year he studied at the Universities of Cambridge, Paris and Hamburg as a Sheldon Travelling Fellow. He came to Brown in 1927 as an instructor, and became assistant professor in 1930 and associate professor in 1937. He took on many added duties, as director of honors study, member of University committees, and managing editor of the Journal of Symbolic Logic, as well as teaching extension courses and delivering many public lectures. He also taught summer school at Harvard, Stanford, and the University of Washington. He resigned in 1949 to become head of the Philosophy Department at the University of Maryland. In 1952 he became professor of philosophy at Duke University, where he was also director of graduate studies until 1956. He retired in 1970, and died on August 30, 1975.
